The Enigma typeface is an exploration of shape grammars, emerging from an experimental process that involved building a custom analogue tool to manipulate paint on paper. Each lowercase glyph is meticulously crafted from a curated selection of these painted shapes, resulting in distinctive curves and peaks that define the typeface's character. These features allow the glyphs to overlap and merge, which is further emphasized by the creation of amorphous ligatures that form symbiotic shapes when combined.
Although the brushstrokes from the original shapes have been removed for stylistic reasons, the typeface retains a subtle nod to its origins through hundreds of imperfect anchor points, inherited from the irregularities found in the original shapes. The paradoxal sharp yet fluid nature of the typeface, along with its unusual backslanted slope, contributed to its name.
